Intro to New Media New Forms

• Something I Enjoyed Making In The Past

I made a birthday card last semester for my 18-year good friend John, who's my classmate in my primary school.
I explored basic concepts of electricity and circuits using familiar and accessible materials. Finally I made a Greeting card that includes a light up circuit and also have some “pop-up” element.

I made a pop-up castle. The drawing was a bit difficult, because I had to use the ruler to measure and always kept balance and symmetry. But what even more difficult was to make the pop-up connections.  I thought it only needed to cut a bit more. However, later on I found they had to match each other, which means every connection should have a certain length. 
In terms of the circuit, I originally thought too complexly. But then my teacher kindly drew a circuit image for me. I was suddenly been enlightened and realized it should be simple - the basic parallel circuit. I also made a smart switch. The secret was using a gasket. When you pressed down the certain button, the copper would meet and the circuit work.

I love this hand-on work and the process I explore bit by bit. It's quite simple but still gave me great satisfaction when I completed it. Also, I bring my best wishes to my friend.

• The Aspect I Learned About New Media Art

New media art is a new art discipline with optical media and electronic media as the basic languages. It is based on the core foundation of digital technology.The category of new media art has the certainty of "advancing with the times". At present, it mainly refers to those artworks that use the latest scientific and technological achievements such as video, computer, network, and digital technology as creative media. New media art has inadvertently penetrated into all areas of contemporary art.

Communication and cooperation have become the focus of attention of artists in the creation of new media art. They are constantly exploring new behavior models and new media, in an attempt to explore the possibility of creating new thinking, new human experiences, and even a new world. Many artists are deeply interested in involving audiences in their works. The definition of an artwork is no longer determined by its physical form, but more by its formation. In short, the fascination with models of new science throughout the 20th century, greatly inspired the artist's imagination.

The social function of culture and art requires people to respond to the trend of image reading.  It is of special significance to introduce digital video art into contemporary art. Artists' participation in digital media often relies on rich artistic resources, all of which can provide new possibilities for the application of digital technology in pure art and applied art. Existing art resources in art history can enable digital technology to produce richer and more peculiar visual results, meet the growing social spiritual needs, and enrich people's social life.
