Session 1 My First Try of Thingspace

Here I Have my first assignment for the course Digital Foundations.

Project 1: Physical Computing Improv
This project is a quick one for me to get to know what your physical computing skills are. Pick at least one item from each of these three lists, and combine them into a responsive object. Whatever you build should be no larger than a 40-centimeter cube. Your object has to respond to a person’s action. It should communicate serially with a screen-based display, and provide the user a way to interact with the display. The interaction must be repeatable, and clear to the person in question. It doesn’t have to be meaningful, but it does have to be engaging in some way.
Work alone on this. You have one week to complete it. Don’t over-think it.

It seems quite interesting, right? But I really didn't have any idea for long. The very basic thing is all the things are not available at my home or thingspace except the cup. However, there must be many works based on cups in our class. Then how to be a little different?

But the material shouldn't be a real limit in my opinion, because we can always get something to replace it. How about making a model instead of the true playground ball? It recurred me when the plastic bits dropped into my eyes in the studio. So if I had plenty of space and enough tools or things, I could just move my model onto a real playground.

Therefore, I'd like to make a model for 'tapping- playground ball- kinetic movement!

Prepare the materials.

At first, I only wanted to make a real small one.

Then, I found even a very small installation could have huge energy. (Through the lever, the plastic bit could fly far.)

So I made a circle to let it be a real toy.

Across the hole, if your bit jumps into the box, then you win!

(Another suggestion: can we have more strong glue in our studio? Most glue there has gone dry so I believe this will be really helpful!)
